Zoning in On The Winter Tummy

Tummy toning challenge

I’m sitting here this morning sipping a cup of green tea and counting the seconds till I’ve finished. Yuk. This is going to take some getting used to.

Why this and not a better cup of ginger, cranberry, or chamomile tea?

Well, this weekend I got inspired and went on a bit of a hunting mission for tummy-toning tricks all over the internet. No clue why, it’s just something I suddenly want to try. I’ve never, ever had a flat stomach. Except before my teens, but that doesn’t count.

So I’ve given myself this winter challenge… As if I don’t have enough on my plate already…

First thing’s first…

Okay, so I went to a bunch of (reputable) health websites and they all boil down to these four things…

  1. Eating right
  2. Regular exercising – cardio and strength
  3. Targeted ab moves (urrrrg)
  4. Cutting down/out stress

Yip. Apparently stress is a big no-no if you’re trying to get rid of your muffin top. Another reason I need to stop slacking on my daily meditation / yoga.

So that’s how I’m trying to see this winter challenge. It’s not just sit-ups whenever I feel like it. It’s changing a few lifestyle things and sticking to them over the next three months.

Jessica Smith suggests putting up a weekly plan and rewarding yourself with a gold star when you’ve done all your daily goals. Now THAT sounds like fun! I can’t remember when last I got one of those, ha!

Food, glorious food…

I’m not going straight into everything all in one go, or I’ll probably lose interest and give up very quickly. Easing into it nice and slow. It’s supposed to be fun – not feel like a chore after all! So this week I’m focusing on eating better.

Over the weekend I stocked up with some of these belly-blasting foods.  (See, that’s where the green tea comes in).

I don’t believe healthy food should cost the earth, so these are all low-budget, easily available foods.

  • Fresh ginger
  • Oats
  • Bananas
  • Nuts (almonds)
  • Berries
  • Green tea
  • Bell peppers

Except for the berries. I bought a box of Hillcrest frozen mixed berries for R41. That was the most expensive item, but I’m aiming to make that box last two weeks so I’ll get my money’s worth!

It’s going to be a very interesting June.

Today’s also the first day of the Adventure Boot Camp for Women (Brrrr!) at 17h30. I’m cold and tired already…

And Imagine You goes LIVE in exactly a week’s time… Can’t believe it’s here already, after all these months.

Before I go, just for interest’s sake – is there anyone else who’d like to try this winter tummy challenge with me? I could do with the moral support. Otherwise maybe I should just print a picture of Jessica Alba’s abs and stick it next to my computer screen for motivation?

Hmmm, I need to check this white tea out. Would make a good topic for an All4Women article. Thanks! I’ll pop you a mail soon 😉

  3. I’m with you on the green tea. Not my favorite beverage, although I know there are some great benefits to it.

As for exercise, the running continues. Slow but sure, right?

Best wishes on your program my friend. You are an inspiration.

Yay! So glad you’re running again, Bill. YOU are my inspiration when it comes to that. 🙂 Another reason I can’t wait for summer – I miss running at 6am! No ways I’m running in the dark or the rain lol.

  4. Here it is the summer tummy and I admit I am trying my best, but still cannot get my tummy as flat as I would like. So, I appreciate all the advice on this and then some. So thank you and wishing you a great week ahead now, too 🙂
