Healthy Living Progress so Far and Looking Ahead to 2014!

I can’t believe it’s already 20 November. That’s just insane.

In exactly a month’s time I’ll be saying goodbye to an awesome half day copywriting job. Though I’m sad to leave there – and I’m only leaving because it was a contract position – I’m really, really excited about what lies ahead for 2014.

I’ll be working from home again, writing full time, only this time it’s going to be different. A year ago I had no clue what direction I was heading into, I sort of just jumped into a little bit of everything. Now I know exactly what I want to do:

  • Copywriting and freelance writing for clients
  • Blogging on and
  • Writing and publishing my first novel (I’ve given myself a year)
  • Publishing a healthy eating/living eBook or something similar

I have tons of other ideas, but I’ll need to put them on the back-burner for now, because frankly – this isn’t a hobby. I’ll be working normal office hours and getting in my workout before the day starts like I’m doing now.

Everything in life happens for a reason. And I’m sure there was a reason I was given these 5 months at a busy advertising agency – thrown in at the deep end – and then pulled back out again to go back to what I was doing. I’ve stopped questioning it and have just accepted it’s what’s meant to be… I obviously wasn’t meant to give up on the freelancing full time just yet!

In other news…

Last week I reached my goal weight. Not that I was trying to lose weight, but with this new healthy eating plan, it just happened… I FINALLY lost those extra 3kg that have been hanging on for the last, oh I don’t know… 5 years! Now I’ve just got to maintain it… and that’s where that little A4 hardcover book comes in handy! Nothing like seeing those numbers in black and white blaring at you to get things back on track.

What else?

Today, I moved onto Level 3 of the Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 DVD. I’m not joking, there were times this morning when I thought I was going to die. Thank goodness for the pause button! But, I got through it and I know it might sound a bit silly, but it feels like a HUGE accomplishment for me. This is my sport and I want to be at the top of my game. I’m addicted to exercising. If I go a day without it, I feel lost.

The eating plan…

Breakfast is still pancakes and strawberries with yoghurt every day, spinach and zesty/chili lentils for lunch and roast/fried veggies for supper. I’m realising though that my body needs a little more sugar, so I’ve got to make an effort to slowly bring back some of it. Just not go crazy about it.

Well, that’s me for today, but before you go, I’ve got a tiny favour to ask (again)…

If you have time, I would really love some feedback on things that you enjoy reading on this blog. I’ve got some ideas for things I want to do here from 2014… I think it could grow into something truly special. 🙂

So, please. Thoughts, comments, ideas – let me know what you think…

What do you like about this blog and what would you like to see more of?

  1. I really enjoy hearing about your health journey and the specifics of what you are doing and what works well for you. I can totally relate to the feeling of getting through a video. I workout at home now in the same way and I know that feeling of getting through a workout that looked impossible (and felt that way at first!). It feels like such a huge accomplishment! I guess it really is. 🙂

Yay, Amy! It’s so good to find someone else who enjoys home workout DVDs as much as I do. They’re awesome! And yes… totally agree with you, to finally be able to do the last difficult level after months, is a HUGE achievement! 🙂

  2. I am glad that life is offering you the best, mel

Ruchira, it’s dealt me some crappy cards – and still is – but, I’ve chosen not to give in and just do it my way, fighting 🙂 This exercising and healthy eating is making a WORLD of difference, I don’t think I’d be so positive with it all, without that. It’s so good to hear you’re enjoying my posts, means a lot – thank you!!

  3. Wow, it goes to show hard work really does pay off. Congrats on all you’ve accomplished!

      Thank you Rhonda! 🙂

  4. I love that you record your progress for all to see. The thing about us writers is we never know how many people we are reaching and inspiring with our words. I have the feeling, Mel, that you inspire many. Well done my friend.

Awww, thank you Bill! That’s music to my ears. Really, that’s something every writer wants to hear and something I don’t think we hear enough. I’m loving this healthy journey – it’s just ignited something inside me – and I just want to share all the goodness and power that comes from looking after your body. 🙂

  5. I voted for a combination. I love your recipes and inspirational quotes. I also like hearing about what is going on in your life. Congrats on hitting your weight loss goal. I too hit mine. I started out at 192 pounds and made it down to 154. I actually went below my initial goal of 20 pounds. I’ve had to add carbs back into my diet as I couldn’t stop loosing the weight.

That’s great Susan! Wow, well done, that’s such an amazing achievement and you should be so proud! 🙂 I know what you mean about the carbs, I definitely don’t want to be unhealthy in the sense of losing too much weight. Right now I’m in a good place and have so much energy. I’ll know when it’s too much.

  6. I totally just voted and am now more then ever excited for what 2014 brings your way. I know that it is going to be great for you and can’t wait to be here as it does indeed unfold!! 🙂

Thanks Janine! 2012 was a good start, 2013 was a good experience and a few learning curves, so 2014 is IT! It’s where it really all begins and I’m excited (though a little scared tbh) 😉

  7. I vote a combo too! I like mixing things up and also, I notice if I try to stream things into categories I ended making too narrow path for myself. I like being able to blog about whatever is on my mind right at that moment. I’m sure you can tell – SO! Whatever I say? Do the opposite! Lol

    1. Melanie Chisnall says: Reply

Hahaha! Your blog is amazing! Can’t believe how much it’s grown in the last year 🙂 I like that too – writing what comes to mind and mixing things up. Otherwise it’s just boring!

  8. I like your blog just the way it is; the question is what do you want to see in it for the future. This is your site and your writing and your heart we are talking about…so what do you want to do, Mel? Whatever you do I will follow. 🙂

Thank you Bill! I like it the way it is too, but sometimes it’s just good to get some feedback. I really am loving this blog and so glad I started it. I can’t wait till I have more time to write on it! 🙂

  9. I’m all for the “combination” of all the above – haha. I love your writing, your insights, your style.:)
    In one month, eh?
I wish I could be back to writing full time, lol. BUT, I need to have some published things under my belt before I go in that direction again, haha.
    Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Cyndi, my friend – you are on a mission and you’re going to get there! 🙂 If I could have stayed in this job, I would have but alas, the universe has other plans for me it seems! Off to go get something sinful from Woolies for supper… have a super arvie!
