Fitness and Healthy Eating Update – February 2014


It’s been a crazy two weeks, oh my goodness. It feels so good to be sitting down, drinking a cup of peppermint tea, listening to Ace of Base (yes, I know… so old school, but I love them) and just blogging.

Can you believe we’re almost a third of the way into 2014? Where is this year going?! SLOW DOWN!

Here’s what I’ve been up to between all the busy madness (not complaining) lately…


mango and coconut oatmeal

This cinnamon, mango and coconut oatmeal makes me feel like I’ve been whisked away to a tropical island… if only for a few minutes. It’s so, so good! If you don’t know why I’m so obsessed with overnight oatmeal or how easy it is to make it, go here.

Other than breakfast, I feel like I’m seriously lacking in inspiration when it comes to vegetarian cooking. For now, I’ll blame it on the scorching hot weather…


I don’t remember the last time I weighed myself and it feels GREAT. I can’t believe how obsessed I was over those silly little numbers! The scary thing was I didn’t even realise what I was doing until I wrote this All4Women article.

I’m thinking about taking part in myΒ first running marathon next month. Yes, it’s completely insane – especially since I’ve just started running, but apparently you can walk as well, AND there’s a 5 km option…

Fitness fun… I’ve started doing a few Kinect games like Fruit Ninja, Dance Central and Your Shape Fitness once a week instead of running or doing a workout DVD. I forgot how fun (and incredibly tiring and mentally challenging!) these were.


On Sunday I went clothes shopping. I’d saved up over a few months and decided I was a few years past a decent wardrobe update. I always seem to buy things on impulse because it catches my eye – like weird patterns or funky colours, without thinking about what I can wear them with, or what they’ll be like in three years from now. Plus I usually buy cute clothes. And I’m fed up with cute right now.

So there I was having fun and stopping midway to enjoy a much-needed thirst-quenching beetroot juice and a few caramel rice cakes, when I got to the next shop and this happened…


This never, never happens to me. I took everything but the stripy top behind me… But I have to say, those five hours and my sore feet afterwards was well worth it. I almost feel like a new person wearing things like this – it’s really so unlike me. (Okay, so the pants have a pattern, but that’s completely OUT of my comfort zone. Another thing I’m trying to do more of this year).



I’m trying another new thing called “not being so serious” or such a perfectionist all the time. It’s not as easy as it sounds. Especially when you’ve been this way all your life. You’d never catch me posting that picture above a few weeks ago, but you know, I figure if I can’t be real on this blog – with a weird facial expression and all – then there isn’t really a point.

On Saturday, my friend and I went to walk a few dogs from the animal shelter in Stellenbosch. I don’t go as often as I want to because I hate going alone – some of those dogs are hyper to say the least (I still have scratches and bruises from last week!) BUT, this place – those dogs feed my soul. Plus it’s an awesome form of exercise because you don’t walk, you freaking RUN to catch up with them!

Here’s the second dog I walked that day… Such a cute little munchkin! I’m not a small dog person at all (grew up with a German shepherd and border collie among other mixed breeds), but I almost wanted to bring her back home with me. So sweet.

    Also that oatmeal with mango and cinnamon made me go yum! Gotta try out that beetroot juice though…you always me look on the other side of the coin, which actually is not so bad πŸ˜‰

    Year is passing by quickly and with your healthy tips…i don’t think you need to step on the weighing machine cause your attitude and your habits are making you walk comfortably!
