What Motivates You?

what motivates you

What motivates you to get out of bed every morning?

What makes you get dressed, show up, and BE present in your life? We all have our own reason(s) for doing the things we do every day. Days that feel like a huge schlep; days where nothing out of the ordinary happens, or days when it feels as though we’ve hit the lotto because they’re so good. (Wouldn’t it be great if every day was like this?!)

My motivation is imagining my life ending. Not the most positive thing to think about I admit, but it works. If I knew I only had a year to live, a month, a week – I wouldn’t…

  • Do something for a living that I didn’t like
  • Spend time with people who sucked the “life” out of me
  • Do things I didn’t want to just to please everyone else

I try and live my life that way. It’s not always easy, but the truth is, we don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring.

This weekend I spent some time with my granny, who’s almost 91. She’s a fighter, but it’s almost the end of the rounds in the ring for her. I was reminded again yesterday of how important it is to spend time with those you love. And to say the words “I love you,” to those you care about, even if it’s not the norm in whatever relationship you have – family, friends… anyone who means the world to you. Anyone you can’t imagine your life without.

Take the time.

Live the life you want to with the people you want in it. Life is too short for anything else.

Enough of the overly serious stuff… I’m leaving you with a few motivational videos I came across… they’re fantastic!

Steve Jobs has 2 minutes of inspiration (similar to what I talked about here), Richard Branson talks for 5 minutes about his love of life, and then there’s a 2-minute video with 40 inspirational speeches crammed in. Really good stuff to start the week with.

  1. It might sound weird, but one of the things that motivates me is waking up each morning and knowing that I have another day to enjoy. Losing family members, you know how short life can be and I definitely try to make the most of it at all times 🙂

That’s so inspiring. Almost as though every day is a chance to turn the page and create your own memories. I love that. 🙂

  2. I loved reading about your motivating things that makes you go.
Honestly, I see the worst in each scenario and that makes me grounded and blessed for what I have, and thus motivates me to keep going.

Had seen Steve jobs video but the other videos were awesome!

Keep it coming Mel since your blog posts keep me motivated either with respect to health/mind.

You are so right… it’s never nice to see the worst in situations, but sometimes that’s exactly what’s needed to give us that big wake-up call! So glad you enjoyed the videos… my favourite was Richard Branson’s (of course, lol). Hope you’re having a wonderful Wednesday, Ruchira! 🙂

  3. I’m motivated by enjoying what each day has to offer and finding gratitude I all I do 🙂

  4. I totally agree with your three things you wouldn’t do and I believe in telling the people you love that you do love them all the time…and when my kids or husband say it to me…I tell them say it like you mean it and make me a believer:)) LOL

Exactly!!! I remember when I was au pairing and ended off a phone call to Geoff with “I love you” (as we always do) and I was told something like we’re still newlyweds and wait till we get older and that won’t happen by the boy I was au pairing. It was as if he was speaking Greek to me, lol. After 13 years together, we still say “I love you” every day before going to work, every night before going to bed and after every phone conversation. Wouldn’t have it any other way 🙂

  5. My doggies!

They’re so cute Michelle! My little fur-balls motivate me too 😉

  6. Definitely agree life is too short and hate thinking about not being here anymore, but I do also agree that sometimes it is thoughts like these that will definitely help put things into perspective to indeed motivate us. Very deep for a Monday morning, but still does make so much sense to me.
